Albert Britt III
COLUMBIA ? Mr. Albert Sidney Britt III died Monday, December 8, 2003. Born in Savannah, Ga., he was a son of the late Albert Sidney Britt Jr. and Annie McIntosh Britt. He was the husband of Elinor Furnell Britt and was predeceased by his first wife, Geraldyne Benton Britt.

Britt was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1957, The United States Army Command and General Staff College and the National War College. He earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of California and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. He was a Regular Army officer for 26 years, leading tank and armored cavalry forces in Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and the Continental United States, including a two-year tour as battalion commander in the 82nd Airborne Division. While an Associate Professor in the Department of History at West Point, he authored a book, entitled The Wars of Napoleon. He was a brigade commander at Fort Jackson for three years.

After retiring from active duty, Britt managed a business consulting team at the University of South Carolina before founding Southern State Training Company, Inc., a management consulting firm for 11 years. He also designed and managed the Crusade in Europe tour project for four years, wrote a number of articles on history and public policy, and owned a farm in the Shenandoah Valley.

He was a vice president, member of the Standing Committee and founder of the George Washington Award for Patriotic Achievement in the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia. He was a member of the Vestry and founder of the Endowment at St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church.

Surviving are his widow, Elinor F. Britt of Columbia; sons, William Benton Britt of Ellijay, Ga., and Albert Sidney Britt IV of Savannah; a brother, William Olin Britt of Savannah; a sister, Jane Britt Vasarhelyi, of Silver Spring, Md.

Services will be held at St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church, Columbia, at 11 o'clock Thursday, December 11, 2003, and interment will be at 11 o'clock Friday, December 12, 2003, in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the Endowment Trust Fund of St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of Columbia arrangements. Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors is in charge of Savannah arrangements.
