Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Larry E. Megahan on January 14, 2004:

Joe was my best boyhood buddy. We shared some great times and adventures. A few stand out. We were Patrol Boys in elementary school and were awarded a trip to Washington, D.C.. That was a very big deal for a couple of sixth graders who had never been away from home before. I remember the fun we had running for Student Council and Class Presidents in junior high school. The work we did fixing and polishing that old '49 Ford, to go double dating. I recall the time during a football game when Joe came to the sidelines holding his elbow. I said, it looks like its broken, you're in trouble now, Joe! His mom didn't want him to play on the football team in the first place. That stainless steal pin in his arm nearly kept him out of West Point. I certainly will never forget all the bumps and bruises we got working out on the parallel bars! Its strange how those memories come back into focus after all these years.

Joe and I lost contact as time passed and our professional and family lives diverged. We bumped into each other once in a Sears store some time in the late '70s. We never met again. I learned today, to my great sorrow, that he passed away nearly six years ago.

Joe was one of the smartest guys I ever knew. At the same time he had a humble nature that made everyone like and respect him. Joe could also be tough as nails. Joe was a born leader. He was perfect for West Point.

May God keep you in His eternal care, Joe. I am proud and humble to have had you as a great, good and true friend.
