Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Anthony Falcon on September 4, 2007:
I can't shake reoccurring thoughts about mortality. I keep coming back to Ben's death. I hear they are dedicating some rugby equipment in Ben's name. It's fitting that who he was as a person continues to inspire people. As I was going through some old files I found this. The following is an excerpt from a cadet evaluation report (Parts 1 and 4) that I wrote on Ben when he was my cadet platoon sergeant at West Point. It was a good memory so I thought I'd share it. His spirit lives on.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART I - ADMINISTRATIVE DATA
Name: BRITT BENJAMIN Grad Yr: 04 AY Company: H4 Duty Position: PLT SGT Report Type: Chain of Command Period Thru: 10/14/02
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART IV - PROFESSIONALISM PERFORMANCE NARRATIVE Ben has been an EXTREMLY had worker. As I look at this form, I wish I had more "Best Describes Cadet" choices because I feel that many of these do describe him. He sets the example in the platoon. He always gives a good assessment of everything that the platoon does. He executes extremly well. Several times I've had too much to do and dropped some stuff on his desk. He always gets it done quickly. He uses his past team leader experiences to guide how he needs to get things done. My only complaint is that sometimes he gets a little caught up in what's going on in the platoon and lets his emotions get the best of him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART V: OVERALL PERFORMANCE AND POTENTIAL
a. Overall Ranking: ABOVE CENTER (UH)
b. General comments on performance and potential. I rate Ben as the number one performer in my platoon. He always knows what's going on in each squad and works hard at making things happen. He consistently sets the example and achieves beyond the standard. I think he will make a fine LT. I recommend him as a company, battalion, or higher staff position for next semester.
c. Recommendations for improvement. Ben needs to work on keeping his emotions out of his leadership. Sometimes his past experiences as a teamleader tend to have him reach for the harsher punishments when they might not always be best.
d. Recommended Military Grade: A
