Benedict Joseph Smith

West Point, 1999

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Sarah Penn 2004 on February 2, 2004:

My sincerest condolences go to you, the family of CPT Smith. I met CPT Smith nearly 5 years ago when I was a junior in high school considering application to West Point. He was my first encounter with a cadet, and I couldn't have been more impressed. After meeting him in the couselor's office of my high school, my future changed. I decided to apply to West Point. Since meeting your son, I was accepted to the class of 2004 and am currently a Firstie, patiently awaiting graduation! Your son/brother/husband was an inspiration to me, and I probably never would have even given West Point a second thought if it hadn't been for him. I never saw CPT Smith again, as he had graduated by the time I reported to West Point. However, I will never forget the hour that he spent with a few classmates and myself. The ultimate sacrifice he made for our country makes me put things into perspective and realize why I came here.
