Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Roger W. Frydrychowski on January 18, 2008:

I had the privilege of serving as aide de camp to Major General Leahy in the late 1960’s. Gen. Leahy served as Commanding General of II Corps covering an expanse of various units and installations in New York City and New York State. I later also accompanied him when he took over command of the Seventh Infantry Division in Korea. General Leahy was a man of intelligence and unswerving integrity. As the senior United States Army representative in New York City he was often called upon to escort high level foreign military and civilian leaders. He consistently showed an exemplary ability to deal warmly and directly with a diverse array of princes and generals. General Leahy was a skilled and strong negotiator. I recall, in particular, his direct discussions with Robert Moses in relation to Army installations within the city. The strength of his leadership abilities were manifest during his command of the Seventh Infantry Division in Korea. His command generally coincided with the North Korean capture of the USS Pueblo and the downing of an Air Force EC-121. He was extremely well respected and well liked by the officers and men within the Division. I recall the cheers at his birthday party as he dropped to the floor and executed the number of push-ups corresponding to his age. I was relieved that he didn’t require his Aide to accompany him in this venture. Through it all, though I certainly tested his patience at times, General Leahy was, to me a mentor, gentleman and role model. He was a devoted husband and proud father. It may certainly be said “Well done. Be thou at peace.” And, I respectfully add “Thank you, sir.”
