John and I grew up together in Huntsville, Texas. He was a hard worker and a great student. To help the family John worked at the Town Theater after school and on weekends. He was very good with algebra and would often tutor me during his stints in the projection room of the theater. John had an old beat-up Chevrolet that was so rotten you could see through the floor. But it always got us to the creek on those fishing and camping trips. John always said, "so long, friend" when parting. One day in 1999 I received a letter in the mail from John. He explained that he had terminal cancer and brought me up to date on what he had been doing. His letter wound up by saying, "so long, old friend." John, so long, old friend. |
