Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David Emswiler on July 14, 2008:

I didn't know Phil very well at the Academy. 1st Reg had classes with 2nd reg so his face was familiar but that was about the extent of it while I was at West Point. After finishing officers basic at Ft Bliss, I drove to the Waco airport, left my car there and flew home to be with my family in Christmas 1975. When I returned to pick up my car I was cold and tired- my flight was late and it was close to midnight- I was due to report to Ft Hood the next morning. My car wouldn't start, I was far from home and with no hope of making it to Hood the next day. Suddenly, Phil appears and offers me a place to sleep at his parents house. The next morning he gets my car started and gets me on the road. I didn't have a chance to thank him, and I never saw him again. But I have never forgotten his kindness, a kindness shown to someone who, until that point, I just considered an aquaintence, but who treated me as if I was a life long friend. Bless you Phil. And thank you, from the bottom of my heart and soul.
