David Alliene Carroll

Born February 17, 1927 - Died May 8, 2000

David Alliene "Dave" Carroll was born in Ashville, North Carolina on 17 February 1927 and was appointed to West Point from North Carolina's Congressional District at the time.

His West Point classmates recall: "With five years background as a Post 'brat,' Dave joined the Corps with the Class of '50. However, with the help of calculus, he decided that the Class of '51 was for him. He kept himself pretty scarce around the campus, but left a beaten path to Cullum hops and Broadway shows. A dreamer by nature he sees Engineer's castles in the future, but crossed rifles have a place in his heart." During his cadet days Dave was with the Cadet Chapel Choir, the Dialectic Society, and Special Programs all four years; went out for Soccer plebe, yearling, and cow years and earned a Monogram; was with the Hop Committee cow and first class years; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

Upon graduation Dave went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to the 28th Division in Europe and served from 1951 to 1952. Dave's next assignment was to Headquarters, Communications Zone, Europe where he served from 1951 to 1954. In 1961 Dave was ordered to the 22nd Infantry Regiment and served until 1962 when he received orders to Headquarters, 7th Division in Korea and served until 1963. Then from 1963 to 1965 Dave served with the 2nd Division. Dave's next assignment was to Headquarters, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division where he served from 1965 to 1966 and was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for distinguished heroism against an enemy; and two Air Medals for meritorious achievement beyond that normally expected, while participating in aerial flight.

From 1966 to 1969 Dave served at Headquarters, Continental Army Command and then was appointed Commanding Officer of the 159th Aviation Battalion, 101 Airborne Division, Republic of Vietnam and served as such until 1970 and was decorated with the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding ser-vices and the Commendation Medal for distinguished service.

Dave's last military assignment was as Deputy Director of Army Aero Services Office where he served from 1970 to 1975 when he retired from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.

After retirement Dave became a Farm Overseer in 1977 and served as such until 1980.

Dave and his wife Rita made their home in New Bern, North Carolina until he died on May 8, 2000.

Dave was also an Infantryman. For the Infantryman's Creed click:
