Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Julie Simonson on May 12, 2004:

The first time I met Benny Smith, it was the summer before my senior year in high school. He was my IAW squad leader and the first cadet I met. We had more people from my squad enter the class of 2002 than any other squad at the IAW and that should be a reflection on him. He was always smiling, always joking about something. He never failed to remind us that a life taken too seriously is a life not really lived to the fullest. When I saw him in the stairwell behind the mess hall during Reorgy week as a plebe, I couldn't help myself. I totally fell out and yelled up at him, "Benny! How's it going? Remember me? Almost the whole squad is here." He took the time to make sure we were all taken care of, all his IAW guys. Benny will be greatly missed. He'll live on in my memory as my first impression of West Point and cadetisms. God bless you, Ben. Be thou at peace...
