Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Michael DeAngelis Jr. on March 14, 2009:

My father, Michael DeAngelis Sr., worked for Mr. Ayer for many, many years. One of his responsibilities was to be the groundskeeper for the Myopia Hunt Club's two polo fields and one enclosed arena.

I remember working with my father during the summer on these fields. As an adult, at age 52 (as of 2009), I have a photo on my Web Site of my father and I as I performed the duties of my first job...goalkeeper and scorekeeper at the Myopia Hunt Club polo games.

I offer long-overdue condolences to Neil Jr. and his family. Neil Jr. extended me many a kindness to me in the days of my Massachusetts youth. Because of my dad's work, the Ayer home and family are an indelible part of the fabric of my life. I remember their huge St. Bernard dog and the time that actor Steve McQueen filmed "The Thomas Crown Affair" at the very polo field I've mentioned. I remember his red Trans Am parked in the Ayers' driveway. As a young man in a small town, these larger than life moments have never dimmed in my later years.

Rest in peace, Mr. Ayer. No doubt you are discussing some matter of importance with my dad, who passed away in 1993...or maybe you're just sharing a laugh. Know that your memory is kept alive by those who knew you and appreciated the spirit you brought to this world, and will join you one day.
