Donald Lovett Smith
Born October 20, 1927 - Died February 3, 1984
Donald Lovett "Smitty" Smith was born in New Smyrna Beach, Florida on 20 October 1927 and was appointed to West Point as a Qualified Alternate.
His West Point classmates recall: "Smitty came to us from the shining sands and sea of Florida, bringing with him an abundance of goodwill, and a sunny disposition that reflected upon all of his associates. He has employed his dependability, resourcefulness, and conscientiousness in winning many friends and making his Spartan life a happy one. It would be difficult to imagine Smitty as anything but a success in any field."
During his cadet days Smitty went out for Swimming and earned Numerals, and was with the Russian Club plebe and yearling years; was on the General Committee cow and first class years; and was a Cadet Lieutenant his first class year.
Upon graduation Smitty went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to his first assignment. In 1954 Smitty resigned his commission as a First Lieutenant.
Smitty accepted a position as a Flight Test Engineer with Convair Aircraft at Cape Canaveral in 1957.
Donald L. Smith died on February 3, 1984 at the Halifax Hospital, Daytona Beach, Florida. His residence at the time of death was S. Ridgewood Avenue, Volusia County, Daytona Beach. His burial was at the Edgewater Cemetery, Edgewater, Florida. Don was divorced.
Russell Smith, 305 Waverly Circle, Daytona Beach, Florida 32018 provided the information to the Office of Vital Statistics. Cause of death is not listed.
