Be Thou At Peace
Posted by LTC Bill Woods, H-1, 1987 on July 1, 2009:
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Jeff's passing...I first met him as a company mate at USMA but really didn't get to know him well until we served together 15 years later in Naples, Italy. Only a few months ago I went on AKO to look him up and try and reestablish contact; I regret I didn't follow through earlier.
I've lost a lot of friends over the last 8 years, but this is the first time I've been compelled to post a eulogy. I can say without reservation or exception he was the most trustworthy and truly honest man I've ever known--and that's a very rare thing. I consider myself lucky to have known him.
I will miss the long late-night debates on the unadulterated Word of God and the frailties of human language, the Koine and countless other topics. We never came to agree on who won, but I'll admit he usually got the better of me! His humor, candor and enthusiasm was a joy to behold. I will never forget the two of us mysteriously and spontaneously breaking into "Salty Dog" during a NATO exercise, each surprised the other actually knew the song, let alone all the words (that really confused all the NATO European staffers...Bluegrass in Italy?)
I was so glad to see that the Army finally began to recognize the talent Jeff had for his craft...he truly had a gift.
My family and I are praying for Jeff and his family...I have no doubt he's walking the high ground now, waiting for those of us who hope to be worthy someday. Safe home, Jeff!
