I have been privileged to know General Ewell through a family connection...my wife is his daughter. Great men have a way of saying great things in few words. A few years ago, when war with Iraq seemed eminent, I asked what his thoughts were...expecting to hear a lengthy analysis of a probable military strategy. With his characteristic nasal twang he simply replied, "It's one damn big mess!" He assessed the situation in five words! He knew there would be no quick easy solution and he was right. Julian Ewell was a devoted father and friend...an impeccable soldier...the stuff heroes are made of. |
