HIMES, COLONEL CECIL RET. U.S. ARMY, age 94, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2009. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was preceded by his parents, Fred C. and Jennie L. Hines and sons, Robert C. and Michael B.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Irene; daughters, Ruthanne Joy Greenwood and Sue Ellen Gibbs; son, James Kelly (Joann) Himes; seven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
He graduated from Batavia (Ohio) High School in 1933 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1937, receiving his BS degree. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Cavalry. In 1940 he transferred to the 2nd Armored Division. Col. Himes was Commandant of the USARCARIB School of the Americas in Ft. Gulick, Panama Canal Zone and Deputy Post Commander of Ft. Hood, TX, as well as CO of the Alabama National Guard. After a prestigious 30 year career, he retired in September 1967.
He then attended Samford University receiving his MBA degree. He continued to reside in Birmingham. He was a golfer and fisherman and enjoyed dancing and traveling. He was a long time member of Mountain Chapel UMC, the West Point Society of Birmingham, the Concordia Club, Elks Lodge #79, the Birmingham Genealogy Society and the Sons of the American Revolution.
