Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Alan Russo on January 8, 2010:

Hank Spengler was a hero and he died as he piloted a Cobra helicopter against the vanguard of the North Vietnamese invasion in April 1972 at Loc Ninh, Republic of Vietnam. This vanguard was the lead of three NVA divisions that would overrun Loc Ninh and Quan Loi and attempt but fail to overrun An Loc in a classic epic 3-month battle.

Hank's heroism, along with CW2 Charlie Windeler (the aircraft commander), allowed US advisors in Loc Ninh to escape successfully from their encampment. I was proud to have served with Hank in the small battery of Cobra helicopters that had such a big part in The Defense of An Loc.
