Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Edward J. Handler, III on March 21, 2010:

There were four graduates in the Class of 1960 who had become service disabled in our last year. Joe Bobula, Larry Sapper, Ed Handler, and Jerry York. Our collective misfortune made for a close bond amongst us. Jerry and I would meet periodically in Ny, Ct,L.A. and compare notes in our respective areas. Joe passed away in an air accident as a VP for Kennometals, Larry(a math prof at Ball State U.) too from natural causes, and tragically now Jerry.
Interestingly Jerry wrote in the 30th anniversary year book that "I envy our classmates who had the opportunity to serve our country in VietNam;..." as all he had wanted since the '50's was an Army career. While I, without speaking to Jerry on the subject, wrote "...that I still believe there's no greater challenge and satisfaction than successfully leading troops."
We later discussed the parallel over breakfast in the early 2000's and still held those views.
He was always available to classmates , generous with his time and money and supportive of our Nation's servicemen.
He fought the good fight and always went like '60 as a business leader of the highest type. Surely he would have been a four star had he but the chance to succeed in our Army.
"May he find a soldier's resting place....". He is truly missed
Ed Handler
