Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Fred Black on April 10, 2010:

Steve was not only a great soldier-scholar but a good friend. We first linked up in the Infantry basic course at Ft. Benning, serving in the same squad, only because of our last names. We both were assigned to the 82d Abn. Div. and worked together as 2LTs a couple of times. Steve went to Vietnam to the 101st Abn. and the next time I saw hime we were back at Ft. Benning.

Later, we were on the faculty together at West Point, he teaching in D/History and I in D/Social Sciences. Our offices were across the hall from each other on the 1st floor of Thayer Hall and we spent more than a few house talking about anything and everything.

After he left West Point, I didn't see him again until 90-something when he was at the Army War College. He clearly was making a great contibution to the education of our future leaders as a military historian. Later when my wife chaired the AWC Board of Visitors, Steve was very helpful to her.

Steve had many special gifts, and being a friend was one of them. Well done Steve!
