Robert Elliot Fitch

Born October 17, 1928 - Died February 12, 2002

Robert Elliot "Chief" Fitch was born in Wenatchee, Washington on 17 October 1928 and was appointed to West Point from the 5th Congressional District.

His West Point classmates recall: "The 'Chief', joining us after a year at Washington State, found the T.D. his biggest stumbling block. As academics have been no problem to this son of the Evergreen State, he can usually be found in the sack engaged in heated arguments or telling anecdotes of any hue. His ambition to command the Indian Scouts is heightened with the stirring cries of 'Hi-Ho, Silver' thrice weekly."

At West Point during his cadet days the Chief was on the Ski Club all four years, the Pistol, Rifle, and Fishing Clubs his plebe year, the Chapel Choir his plebe and yearling years, the Camera Club cow and first class year and he was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

On graduation the Chief went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to the 16th Engineer Battalion in 1952 where he served until 1954 when he resigned his commission as a First Lieutenant. He then went back to school and obtained a second degree from the University of California in 1957. He accepted a position as a Research Engineer with the Boeing Aircraft Company in 1958.

P. S. - Marilene Fitch, adds the following which is gladly added, "I just happened to come across the eulogy that you have recently written for my husband and your classmate, Bob Fitch. First, I'd like to thank you for remembering him and for taking the time to document your remembrances.

I learn new things about his West Point years each time I meet a classmate. He was very bright, a good man, truly the love of my life and I will miss him forever. We were married for almost 28 years when he died and we lived in the Pacific Northwest for all of those years. He spent only a few years in Saratoga, CA , before we met."
