Born September 5, 1928 -- Died April 18, 2010
David Giles "Dave" Carter was born in Washington, DC on 5 September 1928 and was appointed to West Point from the District's Congressional Seat.
His West Point classmates recall: "Despite his magnetic attraction for the sack, Dave participated in both corps squad and intramural athletics. From Lacrosse field to swimming tank his fight and spirit have always been dominant factors. Friendliness and humor have shown themselves from Flirty to the section rooms. Although hampered by his muscle-bound roommates, Dave has been a familiar figure in the upper section rooms."
During his cadet days Dave was with the Camera and Ski Clubs all four years; went out for Lacrosse plebe year and earned Numerals; was with the Sailing Club and a Chapel Usher cow and first class years; and was a Cadet Lieutenant his first class year serving as Battalion Training Officer.
Upon graduation Dave went in the Corps of Engineers and after completing the Basic Engineers Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia reported to the 74th Engineer Combat Battalion in Korea and served from 1951 to 1953. In 1957 Dave earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering from Texas A&M. In 1960 Dave was assigned to United States Engineer District, Chicago and served until 1962 when he was named Executive Officer of the Engineer District.
Dave's next assignment was to Military Assistance Advisory Group, Republic of Vietnam and served through 1964. Next Dave went to the Army Combat Development Command (Engineers), Fort Belvoir, Virginia and served from 1965 to 1966. In 1967 Dave attended the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leaven-worth, Kansas and on completion was named Commanding Officer of the 78th Engineer Battalion where he served until 1969. Next Dave went to Head-quarters, Central Army Group where he served from 1969 to 1970 and then was sent to the Engineer Command Republic of Vietnam from 1970 to 1971.
Dave's last military assignment was as Professor of Military Science to the University of Rhode Island in 1971 and served until 1974 when he retired from the United States Army as a Colonel.
Upon retirement Dave became Athletic Director and Business Manager at the University of Rhode Island, a position he held until 1991.
Dave and his wife Sabra made their home in Locust Grove, VA, to be near their daughter who lives in Fredericksburg, VA."
