Be Thou At Peace
Posted by scott smith on May 17, 2010:
I wish I had had the chance to spend more time learning from Dan Raymond. He was the commander of the 7th Infantry Division's 13th Engineer Battalion in Korea when I was a young LT. And he was the Chief of Military Construction when I worked for him in the Forrestal Building...in fact it was there that he pinned on my eagles. So I experienced his leadership in both command and staff positions, as a young lieutenant and as a (relatively) grizzled 0-6, in the mud and snow and in the halls of DC.
Though focused on duty and the mission, he was always thoughtful, good humored and considerate. He solved problems, modeled appropriate behavior, taught and mentored. It wasn't until many of us had experienced the leadership styles of others that we realized what a great soldier and gentleman he was.
I hope he understood what a positive influence he was for many of us. May his family, classmates and we fellow soldiers always hold his memory in our hearts.
