John Bellis O'Dowd

West Point, 1978

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mark Nelson '76 on June 3, 2010:

I first met John O'Dowd when he showed up to the 2d Engineer Battalion in Korea in Feb 1981. He and his colleagues from Fort L Wood were a breath of fresh air to that stifling battalion. John gave the lie to the notion that engineers were quiet, meek, number crunchers. He filled the room with his presence, and people wanted to be in that presence. I was lucky enough to bump into him several times over an Army career, at Ft Bragg, and including one unexpected encounter in 1999 at Camp Howze, Korea while on TDY. Same John O'Dowd, taking charge and running the show. You could tell his troops would feel bad to let him down. He was that kind of leader.

Gone far too soon. See you on the high ground, O-Dude.
