I just learned of Alan's death from the newsletter at La Salle High School in California, and want to send condolences to his family. I sat directly behind Alan for most of our classes during four years -- G comes just after F -- and we suffered through several years of difficult French together. He was a good friend. I remember him talking about cutting grass in Monrovia for Upton Sinclair -- a famous Californian whom everyone thought was long dead -- our first brush with fame. Of course he was a great runner for the school. But mostly I remember him as incredibly earnest and honest, and I have often thought of what a great role model he must have been for cadets at West Point, and of course for his children.
