Be Thou At Peace

Posted by James Eckler on July 22, 2010:

Jay was my brother-in-law, and a good friend and adviser over the years. I knew him for most of my adult life, and aways admired his stability, his sincerity, and his devotion to his family, his friends, and his work. He always had something good to say about everyone, and he overlooked small faults in favor of the bigger picture about a person.

There were few people that I met in life who were as balanced and as respected by others as Jay. He did exceptionally well in the military, then in international banking, and retired to a wonderful life with his family in California. He lived exactly the life that he wanted, which few people can say. Since I live on the other side of the country from Jay, we saw each other infrequently in the past decade, but when he visited here within the last few years I could see the same sense of happiness and contentment that I had always seen in him before. He was a great husband, father, friend, and for me adviser. In the darkest moments, he could bring perspective and get people back on track.

He is a very good example of the best that West Point had to offer, and the country turned out. I am glad to have had the opportunity to know him. I will miss him as will the others that had the opportunity to come in contact with him. He made the world a better place.
