Sonny Ash was my Beast Barracks Squad Leader. You know the saying, "all I am and all I ever hope to be, I owe to my squad leader." "Sonny", although of course I never called him that, took a young man without any military background and through positive leadership, boosted him up to the level of New Cadet. A very big step indeed. As with so many of those who have influenced my life for the better, I never properly shared my appreciation. Not that I ever got the sense he was doing it for me.
