Walt and I were among that lucky group who were pretty closely mentored by John L. Throckmorton, when then Colonel Throckmorton was coach of our rifle team at West Point. Although Walt was a flanker and I a runt, we became pretty good friends over four years of team membership. Graduation split us, Walt to the Army, me to the Air Force, so it was only the occasional class reunion where we met again. Walt was always one of the steady types, one you could count on to do a good job or to crank out a good score in a close match. He was the ideal man to serve as Rifle Team Captain in '47-'48. |
