Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John E. Markham, Jr. on November 17, 2010:

Marvin Tieman was my company commander in Alpha Company 2nd/34th Armor, 25th Infantry Division in RVN from November 1969 thru about April 1970. Marv took over Alpha Company after the death of his USMA classmate, Don Dwiggins, who was killed east of Nui Ba Dinh in November of 1969. I had the privilege of serving as the artillery forward observer for both of these fine soldiers.

Marv was a good company commander. He was calm, thorough and well liked by his soldiers. Although Marv and I were about the same age, as a freshly commisioned 2LT I considered Marv a mentor and learned alot about being a good leader and a good soldier from him. I carried some of these lessons beyond my active duty into civilian life.

Although I had not seen Marv since we crossed paths in Cambodia in June 1970, I had reestablished contact with him in about 2003 via telephone and email. I was hoping to see him, in person, at a future 2/34 reunion. I am distressed to learn about his death at such an early age. He was a good man and knowing him meant a lot to me.
