William Bamford Holden

West Point, 1952

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Walter Ulmer on December 5, 2010:

My West Point classmate and friend represented the best that our society can produce. Bill Holden, Class of 1952 and a solid member of Company D-2, was one of my two or three closest Plebe friends. He and I had many adventures, being from Maine and therefore understanding a lot about life in general. We needed to get on a training table Plebe year, were in reality out of our league, but luickily made it, barely, onto the cross country C-squad.

Bill was a leader in the true sense of the word: Unselfish, modest, thoughtful, strong, calm, and always a gentleman. He was lucky in love, found a wonderful girl, and nurtured a warm and close family.

I did not have close contact with any of his soldiers, nor with any of his associates in his retired work, but I am absolutely sure they had profound respect and admiration for him. It could not have been otherwise.

Bill was a credit to West Point and to all who knew him. Surely he will rest in peace.
