Be Thou At Peace

Posted by George H. Brett II on December 8, 2010:

Thank you one and all for joining our family here today to honor and say farewell to a great man, a true patriot, and a gentleman.

He was my Dad and my best friend. He told me when I last saw him in hospital that he was proud of his Son and his best friend. He loved all his family and was especially devoted to his grandchildren, who today with their spouses and his great grandson serve as his honorary pallbearers.

Recently he had told me about a Sunday sermon that was his epiphany about Love. The priest spoke of how Love is a resource without measure that one can never entirely give away. He knew then that he was right in giving and sharing his love with you all in many ways whenever he could.

From his West Point years he was guided by, lived by and taught others the truth and value of DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.

As I grew up he reminded me a number of times that his primary job as Military Officer was to end wars, not to sustain them.

Dad was truly a great leader and exemplar over the years to many people, including some of you here today. Many of you have been kind enough to share stories of how much Dad meant to you, and we thank you.

Until his last days Dad pursued his passion to improve and advocate for advances in and resources for Combat Search and Rescue. He worked with young men and women in high school ROTCs to inform them firsthand of the good and necessary work of the US military personnel, the men and women who defend our liberty each and every day. Among the many boards he served on, two that were special to him were the Falcon Foundation (www.falconfoundation.org) and That Others May Live Foundation. (www.thatothersmaylive.org)
