Spencer David Dodge
West Point, 1994
Be Thou At Peace
Posted by H. Kim on January 1, 2011:
I met Spencer Dodge when we were both cadets in the summer of 1992 during airborne school at Ft. Benning. We were both assigned to the same squad at Delta Co, "the Rock", 1-507th. I was ROTC, Spencer was one of two West Point cadets in my squad, along with one enlisted Recon Marine, one 2LT (a dentist), and a couple other ROTC and enlisted guys. What struck me about Spencer was how cheerful he was during the entire training.
Three years later, I heard of his untimely demise while his Ranger class was training at Camp Rudder during the Swamp phase of Ranger School at Eglin AFB in February of 1995. I was very much saddened by this news, and I know how cold it can be in the winter at Rudder and how unpredictable the water levels can be in the Yellow River due to the fact that my parents live in Fort Walton Beach area near Eglin AFB. Even 15 years later, I still have not forgotten that incident and how so many students were lost needlessly in a tragic accident like that.
