West Point, 1958

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Carol Coffey on January 14, 2011:

With each passing day my brothers and my sister, my nephews and my nieces, and most of all my mother, work hard to move away from the pain of losing our leader, but at the same time trying to make sure we all live up to what he embodied.

Today his granddaughter was accepted and received a nomination to West Point, and that would have been another proud feather in the cap of a man who lived Duty, Honor, Country everyday, only he also added Family.

All of us grew up with the stories of General Joe Wheeler, Miss Annie Wheeler, and our father who went to West Point because of the stories he heard from a woman he used to read to after school. Miss Annie died on her way to visit him in his second year on the Hudson. She had no idea what kind of a legacy she created.

My Father, Raymond Isaac Coffey, was Class of 1958, my sister, Valerie Grace Coffey, was Class of 1985, my nephew, Sean Michael Coffey is Class of 2013, and his little sister, Lindsey Rae Coffey will be Class of 2015. And I can't think of anything that would have made my father more proud.

Each day we try to live up to his values and instill them in the next Generation of Coffeys. That is us doing our best to continue his legacy to the future.
