Joseph Bland Love

West Point, 1950

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Edward T. Feldman on March 30, 2011:

I was a draftee in the army from 1952 to 1954. After basic training at Indiantown Gap, Pa., I was transferred to Company A, 3rd Infantry Regiment at Ft. Myer, Va. Our company commander was Captain Joseph B. Love, who was a West Point graduate and had recently returned from Korea and if I remember correctly was awarded the Silver Star for service while there. "A" Company was the company that supplied the men to Guard the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Nat'l Cemetery as well as perform most ceremonial duties at the Cemetery and in Washington D.C.

If this is the Joseph B. Love that was my co. commander, then I want to say to his family that I was very proud to serve under this man. He epitomized to me what the ideal officer and gentleman should represent for our country. He had a wonderful distinctive air about him and had the respect of all the enlisted men who served under him. We used to laugh when he had to post an order that would not be popular with the troops (such as being confined to quarters for some reason) and the order would be signed, Love, Capt.

I subsequently became the ass't. supply sargeant after I had volunteered for duty overseas. Captain Love knew I was a college graduate and that I would probably wind up in Korea. (I was hoping I could go to the European theater) He felt that this private could be an asset to the Supply Room and so I went there. I truly think that he saved me from what could have been a terrible choice on my part, with possible horrible consequences.

I have thought of him many times over the past 57 years, and just "googled" him with the hope that I could have found out what happened to him. I am very happy that he achieved the rank of Colonel and I'm not surprised in the least that he did. He was an outstanding officer and a credit to what the Military Academy and our country stands for.

My sincere condolences to his family.
