Be Thou At Peace

Posted by CPT Craig Vandergoot on April 28, 2011:

Dave,

I met you in EOBC. We both did Ranger prep training, and you know I wasn't the best runner in the world. I didn't really tell anyone, but the fact that I kept being the one that the rest of the group had to wait for really wore me down. That night when you ran five miles side by side with me, dead last, and urged me on despite sharing my worst run time helped me realize what a compassionate person you were.

I discovered that you had been killed when I read the captain promotion lists. I saw an asterisk next to your name, puzzled over what it meant, and took what felt like a punch in the stomach when I read "* Awarded Posthumously."

I know you were a strong Christian, as am I, and I just thought it would be nice to touch base again and tell you that I'm thankful for our brief time together. I was discharged on 15 April 2011, but I'll always hold the people I met in the Army close to my heart.
