Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Karen Ward on April 29, 2011:

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Joyce,
I want to tell you how sorry I am to hear of Rick's passing and I want to apologize for losing track of Rick after plebe year. I do remember what a talented young man he was when I met him at Cornell University as a high school senior and how happy he was to receive his appointment and be a cadet at West Point. I came across a picture not too long ago of us together during the fall of his plebe year...I think it was a homecoming event for USMA '74.
A few hours ago, I was in the new cadet library waiting for my son to link up with me and I was looking at the class ring display that had recently been renovated. I saw Rick's name on the inscription and my heart sank. I had hoped I was confused and it was different person. His picture on the eulogy site confirmed my fears and I am so sad about this tragedy. In the short time after we last saw Rick, he had achieved everything that he could possibly achieve...we should all strive to live up to his example.
Sincerely,
LTC (Ret) Karen Ward
