Be Thou At Peace

William Edward Whittington, III was born on a farm in Orange County, New York, on September 11, 1923. "Bill" grew up in Nutley, New Jersey. At the age of 14, he entered Northwood School for Boys in Lake Placid, New York. He enrolled at Harvard while awaiting an appointment to The United States Military Academy at West Point. There, he played hockey and ran track. "Newt" graduated with the class of 1945 and served his country in the United States Army in Korea, Turkey, Germany, and Vietnam. In 1950, he married Virginia Mace at the Army Chapel in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he was a master parachutist in the 82nd Airborne Division. After 31 years, he retired from active military service and made his home in Bloomfield, Michigan where he attended Highland Park Baptist Church. He was active in the Officer's Christian Fellowship, The Christian Businessmen's Club, and the American Legion. He was a loving husband for 61 years, father of two sons & two daughters, and grandfather to 16 grandchildren.
