Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG Ramon M. Ong (Ret) on May 30, 2011:

RA Johnston was a quiet guy, slight of build and always wearing his eyeglasses. He looked more like a nerdy scholar than an exceptional athlete -- but he showed us that appearances can be deceiving. From the start, he surprised us with his talent for sports, particularly his ability to run very fast and for extended periods of time. He excelled with the Varsity Cross-country Team and the Track Team during his stay at the Academy.

His ability to perform at his best sustained him in academics as well, although with slightly lesser successes. I sat in the same Academic Sections as Tiger, on occasions, particularly during subjects that I did not like -- and therefore wherein I did not perform well. Tiger was always there, but he seemed to enjoy the subject matter more than I did, as shown by his eagerness in class participation. This was a guy who wanted to learn and was happy to exchange ideas with others. But once outside the classroom, he reverted immediately to his quiet personality. One who had a smile for everybody, but who preferred to be by himself or with a close circle of friends.

I never saw him again after graduation, so I never learned much about his careers. I like to think that he lived his life the same way -- always getting the job done in the same quiet, efficient manner. And then fading away like old soldiers are wont to do. Today is Memorial Day, Tiger -- a good day to remember you and our four years together. Be thou at peace, amigo!
