Be Thou At Peace

Fred Richard Miller

Born August 24 1926 -- Died May 28, 2011

Fred Richard Miller was born in New Haven, Connecticut on 24 August 1926 and was appointed to West Point from the 3rd Congressional District.

His classmates recall: "West Point had always been his goal, and after a short stay at Connecticut University and some two years in the Air Force, he came to live on the Hudson. Granting that persistence and aggressiveness are attributes, we envy the men who serve in his outfit. Although we will wonder what happened to the hockey skates and the harmonica we have no doubts about Fred, Army or Air Force, he's the right man." During his cadet days Fred went out for Hockey and earned Numerals; went out for Baseball and earned Numerals in that sport as well. He was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

Upon graduation Fred went in the Signal Corps and after attending the Signal Corps Training Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia reported as Commanding Officer of the Signal Unit in Arkansas where he served from 1952 to 1953.

Fred was next assigned to Headquarters, Allied Land Forces Central Europe where he served from 1956 to 1959. From 1960 to 1962 Fred served with the Office Chief of Naval Operations and in 1964 earned a Master's degree in Business Administration from GWU.

In 1965 Fred attended the CGSC, Fort Leavenworth, KS and on completion was assigned to Headquarters, 7th Division in Korea.

Fred's last military assignment was to the Office, Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel where he served from 1966 to 1969. Fred retired from the United States Army in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

On retirement Fred went into the teaching profession and was a School Teacher from 1972 to 1987. Fred and his wife Pat made their home in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Assembly noted that "Last fall Pat and Fred Miller, visited son Kurt in Germany and later toured East Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Also noted that Fred and Pat were off for China and Korea to visit their son at Camp Casey and mentioned a family reunion in Australia with 3 children, 9 grand-children and a couple of in-laws at Christmas.
