Be Thou At Peace
Posted by LTC Thomas A. Rafferty, P.E. on July 23, 2011:
During "The Best Summer of Our Lives," Camp Buckner 1979, Greg and I were in "The Color Line Show" which had a "Mission Impossible" theme. Greg stole the show as "Mr. Phelps." I'll never forget how during a rehearsal of the tape-recorder scene, Greg added a joke correcting Jim Pirkle's pronunciation of "clandestine." The director, Russ Robertson, let it stay in and it got the biggest laugh of the night.
I was thrilled to learn that Greg would be my roommate for the Fall semester of Yearling year. He was very supportive during my many difficulties. One night, he stayed up until 4:00 AM with me arguing the proper usage of "bring" and "take". Eventually I had to admit I was wrong, a skill that has been very useful to me in life.
After my separation, Greg was one of the few former classmates who remained my friend. He visited me at my parents house and, in 1984, invited me to his wedding and hosted me at his house in Colorado Springs. That, sadly, was the last time I saw him in person.
For a while, Greg and I exchanged Christmas cards and occasionally speak on the phone. He always spoke so highly of his daughter, Heather, that I'm sorry I never had a chance to meet her and that her son, Greg's grandson, will not have a chance to know Greg. Eternal rest grant to him, oh Lord, and may Your perpetual light shine upon him. And may his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
