Be Thou At Peace

I had the tremendous good fortune to have Dean Herman join my team at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in 1998. We worked side by side over the next seven years. I found that Dean exemplified that near perfect balance of intellect, personal integrity, humanity, humility and those many personal attributes we aspire to but never quite achieve fully. Perhaps that stemmed from his upbringing, his training at West Point, his education at Stanford, his experiences under fire, or was just innate, but whatever the source, it made him a beloved member of our team, and a tremendous contributor to our success. I speak for the entire IBM community with whom Dean worked, and particularly for myself, in expressing great sorrow at his passing, and our sympathies for his wonderful companion in life, his wife Marg. As many have written here, let me repeat words I often used when addressing Dean to sum up his life, those simply being "Well Done". Sadly, I need to add "You will be sorely missed".
