Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Carthal (Cathy) Merryman Wanko on October 8, 2011:
I have just become aware of this website and would like to post additional information on my husband, Tom Wanko 18131.
After his disability discharge from West Point, he obtained employment with U. S. Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh, PA. Soon after, he was transferred to Gary, IN Sheet & Tin Mill to take over a supevisory position in the Engineering Dept. He was registered with his Draft Board in Monessen, PA and was able to receive several deferments from U. S. Steel, until the Draft Board finally said: enough. He went through basic training in Ft. Knox, KY, where they begged him to go to OCS School. He declined. He was sent to The Presidio in San Francisco, CA to the Engineering Corps. We were married in May, 1955 and lived in San Francisco for the balance of his two years. We returned to Gary, where he became supervisor of Appropriations and Control, dealing with contractors, the Plant, and headquarters in Pittsburgh. Along with 1000 other employees, he was retired in 1983 at age 55.
After his death, more grandchildren: Samantha Wanko is now 19 yrs. and has just begun college at Allegheny College in Grove City, PA. She is the daughter of our son Jeff. Tom was able to see Zachary, first child of Laura & Paul Blahusch who live in Fairfax, VA. They have two other children: Hope, 10 and Aaron, 6. I drive down to see them 2-3 times a year.
I sold our home in Upper St. Clair, PA in January, 2011 and live in a condo in Bridgeville, PA.
