Colonel Albert C. Costanzo, age 84, died on October 5, 2011.A Born and raised in Lewis Run, Pa. he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1945, where he served as an Army surveyor, attaining the rank of corporal.A In 1947, he was appointed to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point.A Upon his graduation, as a member of the Class of 1951, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).A Colonel Costanzo served in Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and throughout the United States.A He received two-Legion of Merit Awards, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service and Army Commendation Medals, two-Army Meritorious Unit Commendations, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, in addition to U.S., Korean, Vietnamese and Cold War Service Medals. He received a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studied mathematics at Harvard and Columbia Universities, and taught mathematics at West Point.AA He was also the USACE District Engineer in Wilmington, N.C., and Resident Member of the USACE Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors.A He retired from the Army in 1981 with the rank of Colonel.A Al and his wife, Rose, retired to a farm in Culpeper County, Va., where they grow Christmas trees.A They also volunteered for the Culpeper Literacy Council, where he earned the Va. Literacy Foundation's 2002 Jeannie P. Baliles Award in Literacy.
He is survived by his adored wife of 57 years, Rose; five sons, Christopher of Chicago, Il, Daniel of Arlington, Va., Albert of Arlington, Va., Anthony of Louisville, Ky., and John of Virginia Beach Va.; and one daughter, Cecilia Hull of Richmond, Va.A He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Dennis, Francis, Carrie-Ann, Rene, Quinn, James, Christopher, Ana, and Isabella. He is preceded in death by his parents, Crescenyo and Vincie Costanzo, an infant daughter and his sisters Jeanne Cucezza of Bradford, PA and Olympia McMahon of Washington, PA.
