JOHN PRESNELL WAS BORN IN PORTLAND, MAINE. AFTER GRADUATING FROM BOWDOIN COLLEGE, HE ATTENDED WEST POINT. HE GRADUATED FROM WEST POINT CLASS OF 1940 AS FIRST CAPTAIN AND WINNER OF THE KNOX TROPHY. AFTER GRADUATION, HE SERVED AS A COMMISSIONED OFFICER WITH THE 14TH ENGINEER REGIMENT, PHILIPPINE SCOUTS ON THE ISLAND OF CORREGIDOR. HE WAS CAPTURED AND SURVIVED THE BATAAN DEATH MARCH AND WAS HELD AS A PRISONER OF WAR AT CABANATUAN. HE DIED ABOARD THE JAPANESE HELLSHIP BRAZIL MARU ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 19, 1945 WHILE THE SHIP SAILED TO JAPAN.
