Speed came to West Point a decorated Korean War combat veteran. We looked up to him. He set the standard for excellence. During Cow Year he introduced popcorn machines, flying squirrels and Meershaum pipes to South Area and to his roommates, to me and to Jerry Zabriskie. During Cow Summer, Speed introduced me to Europe. We overshot the train staion because we failed to recognize that Muenchen was Munich, but we doubled back to sample the brew at the Hofbrauhaus. We imitated the life of penniless students at Heidelberg. We basked in the breezes of the Azores. Good times. As a wise man once said, "There is no cure for birth and death save to enjoy the interval." Rest at peace, good friend. |
