Robert Worth Berry
West Point, FRIENDS
Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Ron Rezek, USMA 1964 on December 9, 2011:
In the 1980's, General Max Thurman served as the Army Vice Chief. Army Football was winning games and managed to get to the Peach and Cherry Bowls. General Thurman wanted to recognize the Army Team and hosted a trip to The Pentagon and other events in Washington DC. Bob Berry and I were somehow designated as the local trip section sponsors. During our partnership, we thought that The Commander-in-Chief should present The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the winner--that being The Army Team. WIth a little effort and some behind the scenes meetings, President Reagan agreed on short notice to present the award at The White House. Thus began the tradition that continues today.
Bob Berry loved West Point and especially, West Point Football. He worked on so many projects with General Thurman and assisted with many others at West Point to help Cadets, the Staff and Faculty, and The Army. As a former General Counsel and USMA Department Head, he was never afraid of doing hard work, but used his top-level position to ease through the maze of challenges.
General Bob--"thanks" for all of your great efforts on behalf of West Point and our Army. I am honored to have worked with you. "Well Done", Sir!
