Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Jim H. on February 11, 2012:
Harriet and family, Faye and I wish to extend our condolences to you on Bill's passing -- It was of great comfort to me to know that he received my email, and I was able to bid him goodbye. I watched "Memphis Belle" again and recalled some of our discussions and activities. I still remember when Bill would attend the Rockwell/Boeing Strategy Working Group and Mike Yarymovych would ask Bill what the Soviets were doing, and Bill would answer that "we just do not know", which was unfortunately true, but Mike wanted that which was not possible. The Strategy Working Group was of significant importance in the policy and decision making circles in DoD, and Bill helped make it so. The books on the Soviets that you and Bill authored were of tremendous assistance in understanding the Soviets, and they informed and helped educate many policy and decision makers. The legacy of the thousands of books on Russia that you and Bill gathered on your trips to Russia, which you donated to the University of Kentucky library, will help train many future "Russianologists", and continue to contribute to the security of America, for Russia will again very likely pose a threat to world peace, and we will need their expertise-- and that is a tremendous legacy.
One of the laws of physics is that energy is eternal--it can be changed in form, but it cannot be destroyed and continues to exist. While Bill's body may be laid to rest, the energy of his life force is still present, starting his next great adventure. I can picture Bill piloting his B-17 into the universe to join his comrades. For as we gaze upon the cosmos, it is infinite, without end, and time has no beginning or end. There are many things we do not know and cannot comprehend--and this is why faith is important. So as Bill departs on his journey, we say not only goodbye and god speed--but more importantly, 'til we meet again. --Our love and support is with you, Jim and Faye
