Be Thou At Peace

Posted by LTC David F. Schultz on April 5, 2012:

Lori was my first platoon leader when I was an enlisted MP assigned to the 194th MP co, Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany back in 1984. I always liked Lori and respected her professionalism and her devotion to duty.

I remember talking to her once about leaving the Army. I was enlisted at the time and she was an officer. For an enlisted man it's very important to know the date you are due to leave the Army and we count the days down on a "Short timers" calendar. So I told her I had exactly 51 days and a wake up till I take the freedom bird back home. Then I asked her "So LT how long you got?" She looked at me with a puzzled face and said "Officers don't have ETS dates and I'm not getting out." At the time I didn't fathom the fact that anyone would want to stay in the Army. Its only now, that I'm an officer, do I realize how she felt. Wherever Lori is now I hope she feels the same way.
