Be Thou At Peace

Dan, Another year has passed since I last wrote to you, though I think of you often. Much has happened in my life: I graduated from MCCC, PCS'd to a new duty station at Ft Drum, NY, and deployed for another 3 months to Afghanistan. Thinking back to being at Benning with all the boys earlier this year, I remember feeling your absence, as if we were waiting for you to walk through the door with that bright, trademark smile on your face. Though you were not there in person, we all knew you were there in spirit. Near the end of my most recent deployment, my motorpool chief and I were sharing stories of our past units and your name came up. Rand - he said you were his XO in Hawaii and he was there on your last deployment. Halfway around the world and in the worst place on Earth, you were remembered by us who were complete strangers until a month prior to the conversation. And Dan, the thoughts and stories of you brought the biggest smile to our faces - for that moment the misery of deployment was erased, and nothing but true happiness embraced our souls. We are so fortunate to have known you. Brother, your sacrifice is not forgotten. I am here now to remind you that your memory lives on in my heart - and it is your memory that gives me the strength to be my best. Thank you, Dan. -Adam
