West Point, 1940

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Susan Chambless on July 13, 2012:

George Columbus "Lum" Hines was born 29 Dec 1917 in Coke County, Texas, probably in Bronte. His parents were Columbus B. "Lum" Hines and Lula M McCutheon Hines. In the 1910 census, Columbus B Hines, or "C. B." was listed as a salesman in a hardware store. C. B. died soon after George was born.

In the 1920 census, Lula is shown with her three children, J.B. (James Benton), 12, Esther L, 5, and George C, 2. None are employed. They do own their own home.

In 1930 the Hines household consisted of Lula, her oldest son, James Benton Hines, 20, an automobile salesman, James' wife Imogene, Esther Lou and George.

George graduated from West Point in 1940. His yearbook photo is shown here http://gausschildren.org/genwiki/index.php?title=File:HINES,_George_Columbus_(1917_-_1945).jpg. With it is this inscription:

Out of Texas came a big smile, a disappearing head of hair, and a picture of "Bobbie." For four years Lum has remained faithful to his hair tonic and "Bobbie." None of West Point's trials and tribulations, not even the job of company commander, could wipe the grin from his face. Raised on the back of a cow pony, Lum is continuing on that way, and it won't be long before he'll be out of a slow trot into a full gallop in his chosen branch, the Cavalry. "Lum"

Lum and Bobbie Mae Halbert were married 22 May 1940.

Maj. George Columbus Hines died "over Germany" 16 Jan 1945. He has monuments in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis and Fairview Cemetery, Bronte, Texas.

I didn't know Lum personally, but was touched by what I found in my genealogical researches.
