Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Matt DeHaven on March 18, 2005:

Dave and I knew each other in passing at West Point. We didn?t get really close until our paths crossed again at Fort Knox. Between AOB and initial assignments at Knox we grew closer than brothers. In fact we ?borrowed? a phrase from Dan Fogelberg ? we were ?twin sons of different mothers?. Through the years and despite the miles we were always there for each other. I knew I could always call Mac to help me through any difficulty. He was a sounding board for my gripes, a shoulder for me to cry on, and a buddy to share a beer with. Together, we shared the joy of the birth of his children and the devastation of his first wife?s death. In an era when too many men are afraid to admit it, Dave and I were able to say ?I love you? to each other. The fact that they were also the last words we spoke to each other gives me some solace at his passing. I will keep his memory and his family close in my heart and in my prayers.
