Be Thou At Peace

Posted by SGT. (Ret.) John Hardesty on November 9, 2012:

Hello Sir. Its been a great many years since our last salute from me to you.. Alot of changes in my life have got me looking back and trying to remember my time in the military.. i remember the first day you arrived in our unit.. and u said to me " so ur the private from Springfield?" i wasnt the best soldier while in garrison but u looked out for me.. And when i was told you had chosen me to be your driver i was deeply honored.. i served proudly by your side fearlessly knowing you would get me home to my new daughter safely.. Overseas u taught me selflessness.. and i look at you as my greatest hero now several years later my daughter is growing and happy and im a strong devoted fearless father my second child Camden has just turned one.. i am very fortunate to have the many things i have now and the military is another life that i no longer carry with me.. but the memory of u has never faded i still remember moments before the fatal explosion u had noticed i was in the gunners turret instead of the drivers seat.. the last thing i remember was u looking back at me with the half grin.. u loved ur troops sir and we loved you.. your memory lives on and will never fade i look foreward to telling my son about the hero he is named after.. go easy on em up their sir they arent all Rangers.. until we meet again.. Darkside...
