Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Irene Yerks O'Malley on November 29, 2012:
What can someone say about Col Oakes. He was a national treasure. He helped countless numbers of fine young men and women secure a future. Whether it be through direct admission or via his contacts in the prep school arena. If he felt there was potential then he pushed and made it happen.
Back when I was a lowly Plebe he and Carol became my sponsor family. They were open, warm and completely gracious. I could not imagine better people in this world. They made me feel like family.
Without fail, each week I would get a shout from the OD who would say "Yerks, your Saturday phone call has come." I would rush out to hear my favorite phrase, "Bet I can beat you to MacArthur!". I would rush back to my room and mark my card, make sure my room was clear and try as I may, he always beat me there. Wager, I would have to buy him some french fries to bring home to Carol.
Best memories... 5:00 stop and toast with Carol. The love they had for each other was clearly visible and inspiring.
You are missed.
My heart, prayers and love go out to the Oakes Family. God Bless!!!
Love, Irene Yerks O'Malley
